  Racing  21-25 January, 2018 (10 races – 2 races per day

Location

The Club is situated on the foreshore of the township at the south end of Port Philip. In years past it was the traditional site of the lighthouse utilised by commercial shipping to navigate the turn in the narrow channel between Port Melbourne and the Port entrance.

Although the channel remains in daily use, the lighthouse is now known only as a local landmark; superseded by modern navigation methods.

McCYC sits before a broad expanse of beach consisting of soft white sand. Immediately in front of the club and included within its boundary is a large well-grassed lawn ideal for rigging boats away from sand and salt.

Club Facilities

  • The building is a two-level structure. The upper level boasts a spacious function area which easily accommodates 120 people and is supported by a fully fitted domestic kitchen
  • An expansively stocked bar with appropriate liquor licence.
  • An audio visual system is available with facilities to play movies or connect a computer or similar device should an Association wish to run (for example) approved advertising or photo’s of the day’s sailing or Race Tracking software replays.
  • A large covered deck provides additional seating and is accessed via the large glass panoramic sliding doors.
  • Demarcated measurement area with annexe covering as required
  • Separate Control Tower and Regatta Office
  • Private Committee room
  • Private Jury room
  • Undercover viewing areas on the upper deck and lower deck which provide outstanding viewing
  • Announcements for spectators and competitors via PA system
  • On-water briefings from the Race Officer via radio piped through the Club PA system

Substantial and recently renovated change rooms are found on the ground level for all sailors. These consist of showers and toilets in numbers sufficient to cater for regattas of any magnitude. They are secured by a keypad entry system and are patrolled routinely by Club committee personnel.

Weather

When traditional southerly winds are in, Race Officers invariably set courses to the west of the club (towards Rosebud pier). This guarantees consistent wind direction and angle by moving away from the nearby hill (Arthurs Seat) and means that seas are always less than a ½ metre in height.

From December to March, McCrae routinely experiences the arrival of sea-breezes between 15 to 22 knots over flat water with no swell; perfect for small dinghies such as the Contender.

These winds arrive on average between 1430 hours and 1700 hours.

The only time wave height exceeds a metre is when warmer northerly winds blow from Australia’s interior; the open fetch of water between McCrae and Melbourne being responsible.

Depending on prevailing conditions regarding tide cycles, currents of 1.5 to 2 knots tidal effect can be expected.

Average temperature for the time of year is 26 Deg C with a water temperature of 20 Deg C.

Water and Courses

McCrae’s prevailing weather pattern is dominated by south to sou-westerly winds of varying strengths. During the summer months, this remains the case however warmer conditions bring variations from all points of the compass.

The water on which McCYC traditionally runs events is bounded by the 5 knot line found 200 metres offshore out to the south side of the shipping lane.

A “No-boating” exclusion zone currently exists between the high water mark and the 5 knot line to the east of the club. Regardless of the course orientation, this exclusion zone does not ordinarily affect the fleet due to the sailing area otherwise available.

The potential area available means that courses of any angle up to 1NM can be accommodated anywhere in close proximity to the club without encroaching on the shipping channel or other prohibited area.

Parking

Ample free parking is available to the rear, west and east of the Club which accommodates in excess of 200 vehicles.

Trailer Storage

Limited trailer storage is available immediately east of the club.

Extensive trailer storage is available by agreement with the Council 100 metres south of the club in Bartels St.

Accommodation

Various forms of accommodation are available throughout the region. These range from local campgrounds and caravan parks to guest houses and motels.

Billeting of competitors and International Jury members is also a traditional method of accommodation. Many club members live locally or have premises available and are keen to help interstate or overseas travellers. Negotiation can be facilitated through the Club.

Getting there

McCYC is approximately 1 hour by car from Melbourne; a distance of around 80 kilometres

After departing the Melbourne CBD via the Eastern Freeway, commuters encounter a single set of traffic lights if travelling via the East Link and Peninsula Link options

The area is also accessible via public transport by train to Frankston and bus thereafter.

If approaching from the opposite side of Port Phillip, a car ferry with ample capacity for boat trailers runs every hour on the hour during the hours of daylight in the summer months.
