Easter Regatta 2018 the Report

Note : out of respect for 25% of the participating fleet, this report is in English

Eater Regatta, the opening sailing event of the year every Contender sailor is looking forward to, is traditionally well attended. Finally back in our beloved boat, finished the senseless downhill skiing or watching F1 races, instead back on the water in good company. Unfortunately the number entries were low, down to only six (7 for a short moment, due to a laser sailor forgetting he did not have the right boat yet). Of course, some had an excuse with their boat still in a container, returning from the worlds, but not everyone went down-under. Enno opted for an easier class as his beloved Anna was still in the container as well.

But okay, 6 entries, though Rob soon let us know he was unable to come. This left us with only 5 boats on Saturday morning (quality prevailing quantity), all eager to rig up and get racing. Unfortunately, as the sun started shining and temperatures rose, the wind dropped, resulting in a final ‘no races today’ at 13:00.

Next day Easter Sunday promised better (less sun, a little bit of breeze), but it showed also Bart dropping from the fleet. This left us with an international fleet of 1 GBR (Tony), 1 BEL (your reporter), and 2 Dutchies. As 3rd member of DCA, predicting of the reporting duty was easy.

4 short races were held in light conditions, conditions frustrating the heavier weight helms. Frustration which let Paul to follow Tony to the wrong finish line in the first race, though Dirk clearly showed them where to go. For me the line was easy to find as well, resulting in an unexpected second. Race 2 and 3 showed similar patterns with Dirk early leading, a close battle for second, and Tony suffering from the light conditions. But in race 4 our BCA representative did put pressure on Dirk who continued to deliver strongly, and Paul forgetting to cover me on the final beat, resulting is a 4th place (or last ).

Monday promised some more wind, slightly colder and a bit of rain were predicted, though not to bad once on the water. More wind showed immediately it’s effects, with Dirk and Paul running away in some steady 1-2 results. Tony suffered from some bad choices and still light conditions not suited to his physical condition so early in the year, causing him to abandon in race 3. Dirk and Paul continued their strong performance in race 4, and a breaking trapeze close to the first windward mark resulted in an sudden swim and abandon for me.

After a nice reach back to the harbor, the final result showed a strong delivery from Dirk, followed by Paul, your reporter, and Tony.

It was again a nice, well organized event, showing that those not there missed something.

And a special thanks to Anna and Tony for their hospitality on Sunday evening.
